Cabaret

With a lengthy background as an educator in the Visual and Performing Arts, as well as performing in a number of significant productions, a move into writing for performance was inevitable.  David began writing satirical revue material back in the 1970's.

In recent years he has written, directed, co-produced and performed in the following Jazz Cabaret productions:

  • “Funny Valentine”  (a biography of composers Rodgers and Hart) 2007
  • “The Speakeasy(a tribute to the music and times of Fats Waller),2007
  • “The Medusa Kiss” (Commissioned for the Broke Festival, later performed at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Newcastle and Lizotte’ s, Central Coast)...a film noir detective story set to the 1930 - 1940 standards of  Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Harry Warren and others
  • The Hip Gringos Guide To Rio” ....set in the decadent and dangerous Rio of 1979 as character Romeo Edwards - freelance travel writer - attempts to discover the lost era of the Bossa Nova (1956 to 1963)** nominated for Newcastle's prestigious CONDA Awards 2011 in the Best Special Theatrical Event category
  • "Tramp Steamer Tramp"...a 1937 adventure/spy/thriller melodrama featuring novelty songs from 1910 to swing (2013).
In April 2008, David was commissioned by Live Sites, Newcastle, to co-produce, musically direct and run workshops leading to a cabaret performance tentatively titled, The Blue Rinse Vaudevillians. This was performed in Newcastle Mall as part of Newcastle’s Street Performers’ Festival

Ken Longworth’s review of “Funny Valentine” in the Newcastle Herald, 25th April, 2007, stated, Newcastle musician and writer, David Baker’s love letter to one of the 20th century’s most accomplished song writing teams, composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz Hart, is not just funny but witty, informative and most entertaining….
There is a market for tribute shows and Baker’ is one of the best I have seen.
